"Roof," I reply, casually. It's the truth, but I say it like a lie, the inflection all wrong. I could be joking. (I probably should be joking.)
What business does a blind man have on a roof? Plenty, it turns out, but the average person wouldn't think it, and I'm meant to be blending in. After the circus that became my life back home, I've come to appreciate my relative anonymity, but I've lived a dual life for so long that it's not always so simple, pretending I'm just the one person.
What is simple is letting Lexie take the lead. I haven't lost enough blood to make me lightheaded, but I'm not entirely comfortable, either, and it saves me the effort of having to think too hard about where I'm going, and why. Besides, I'm sure she knows where she's headed.
